Joe & Jo Hughes started EGI with a small group of friends from North Texas when they returned from the mission field and presented the great need for training and materials to them. EGI was registered as a 501C(3) in 2005, and many of those friends became the Board, advisers and authors of the series.
Our "Journey to the Nations" began in 1975 just at the height of Jesus People Revolution that was sweeping across America and then the globe. We gave our lives to Jesus in a "Jesus People" evangelistic tent in Rome Italy and never looked back.

And what a life Jesus has given us. From "forsaking all" and traveling with this tent ministry for 3 years in Europe and then to the Philippines for one year. Two years later returning to the Philippines where we did rural church planting for 10 years and then leadership training across mainly Asia, based in Singapore for 11 years. We lived 26 years in the foreign mission field doing evangelism, church planting, and leadership training for church multiplication throughout Europe, SE Asia, Ukraine & Africa.

We returned to reside in the US, in 2001, but we still traveled for business and ministry back to Asia, Europe and Africa. While living in Singapore God had provided an opportunity to have a business visa through consultation 1 week a month for an art glass company until 2007 when Joe had some serious health problems. When we returned to be stateside based, our friends from our first home church that sent us to the Philippines in 1980, joined with us to form EGI and write materials that could take the training to the people, instead of the people having to go somewhere to get training. As an example, we traveled to Ghana in 2013 to train leaders from 8 nations that expanded using it in 19 nations. Besides those African nations our materials are being used in Zambia, the Philippines, Kenya, India, Nicaragua and soon to be in Guatemala and Nepal, and others. Most of these places we haven't been to but have put the materials in the hands of leaders with vision and they have taught, discipled and expanded to other countries. That is our vision for the future. Put the tools in the hands of the workmen and they will get the job done.
